After being "published" with Lulu, I have been better able to spot self-published books. The other day I did see a self-published book in Borders. The real store, not the internet.

I'm not sure how successful you can become that way, but I'm sure the author loved seeing their book in a real bookstore.

Agents are probably the way to go. Many publishers do not accept unsolicited manuscripts, and even if they do, an agent is your best chance of getting through the slush pile. Good agents also don't charge until they get your book published.
