No noise nor silence, but one equal music...
Music when I write is distracting... |

Mostly just my usual music, because I listen to music so much that once I've had a cd for a week or so, i stop noticing the music. I agree that cafe noise, etc, is often nice, and only occasionally do I want complete silence. I usually need silence if I'm in a really turmoil-y mood, in which case I have a pretty hard time writing anyway.

I almost have to listen to music while writing. Or at least be somewhere with noise. I can't stand silence to save my life. I'll listen to anything, well, depending on what I'm writing. If it's something emotionally inspired, I may listen to instrumental, soft indie, or classical music. If it's something on the fly and it just comes up out of nowhere, probably rock, hardcore, or punk. I've come to realize a lot of my scenes are depicted with a "theme song" by whatever I'm listening to at the time.

I fall into the "silence" group the majority of the time. If I'm writing crap and don't care - i.e. during NaNoWriMo - I might put something on, but if I actually need to stop and think about what I'm writing, music just distracts me.
