Kari: I wrote this ~10 months ago; looking back on it now, I think I may have oversimplified the matter by telling people to never post writing that they want to sell. In general, it's true that publishers will be less interested in something that has already been published. (For example, I've seen some short story markets specify in their submission guidelines that they only want new work.) But there are exceptions, and in some specific cases publishers have even bought things specifically because they're already very popular online.

As for Cassandra Claire, as far as I know she didn't put anything on the web that she later tried to published. She became well-known from her Harry Potter fanfic, and that may have helped her get a book deal, but she never posted City of Glass (or any of her other published books) online.

I haven't published anything online in quite a long time, and I'm not sure that I'd ever want to sell some of it-maybe one piece. But why wouldn't we want to put our works online that we might want to sell? I'm genuinely curious. Clarissa Clare (YA author of City of Glass) started out that way-albeit she had some drama surrounding her, but nonetheless. Are publishing firms less likely to publish something into book form that's already been put out on the web?
