In <em>general,</em> it's true that publishers will be less interested in something that has already been published. But there are exceptions, and in some specific cases publishers have even bought things specifically because they're already very popular online. As for Cassandra Claire, as far as I know she <em>didn't</em> put anything on the web that she later tried to published. She became well-known from her Harry Potter fanfic, and that may have helped her get a book deal, but she never posted City of Glass (or any of her other published books) online. But why wouldn't we want to put our works online that we might want to sell? I'm genuinely curious. Clarissa Clare (YA author of City of Glass) started out that way-albeit she had some drama surrounding her, but nonetheless. Are publishing firms less likely to publish something into book form that's already been put out on the web?
